EMIRATES REMOVES CHANGE FEES ENTIRELY ON DUBAI-BOUND TICKETS AND CUTS REFUND CHARGES TO US$25 AS IT MOVES TO SHORE UP BOOKING CONFIDENCE

Emirates has introduced unlimited free date changes on every fare type for travel to Dubai from 10 August, reduced refund fees to as little as US$25, and is offering insurance covering conflict-related disruption that is not restricted by government travel advice – a package aimed squarely at the hesitation caused by regional airspace disruption.

REMOVING THE COST OF CHANGING YOUR MIND

Emirates has announced five measures intended to give customers greater flexibility and confidence when booking. The most substantial is the removal of change fees on travel to Dubai. From 10 August 2026, customers travelling to Dubai may change their travel dates as many times as they need, free of charge, across every fare type — from Saver through to Flex in Economy, and across Special, Saver and Flex fares in Business Class. Economy Flex Plus, Premium Economy, Business Flex Plus and First Class fares remain fully flexible as before. An applicable fare difference may still apply, and no-show fees are unchanged.

Refund fees on flights to Dubai have been substantially reduced, to US$50 on Economy Saver fares and US$25 on Economy Flex fares. In Business Class, refund fees are US$50 on Special and Saver fares and US$25 on Flex fares. Taken with unlimited free date changes, the effect is that a customer can move or abandon a Dubai booking for a nominal sum — which is the point of the exercise. Across the wider network, customers receive one free date change on tickets booked from 2 April 2026, including journeys connecting through Dubai, and may hold a fare for 24 hours at no charge while finalising plans.

INSURANCE WRITTEN AROUND THE ACTUAL PROBLEM

The most unusual element of the package is the Comprehensive Travel Cover, which Emirates describes as an industry-first insurance product. It includes conflict cover with reimbursement of medical expenses up to US$25,000 and a free trip extension of up to 30 days, and covers trip cancellation, baggage delay and loss, unlimited worldwide medical expenses and emergency evacuation. It is available across 27 countries and can be bought at the time of booking on emirates.com or added to an existing booking through Manage Booking.

The detail that distinguishes it is a single clause: the cover is not restricted by government travel advice. Conventional travel insurance is voided the moment a government advises against travel to a destination, which is precisely when a traveller most wants cover and precisely the point at which bookings stop. Writing a policy that survives an advisory notice addresses the specific mechanism by which regional instability suppresses forward bookings, rather than the general anxiety around it. Where flights are disrupted, Emirates states it will provide accommodation directly to affected customers, and where onward connections on other airlines are affected or Emirates services are unavailable, customers are rebooked to their destination at no additional cost — including where cancellations are caused by airspace disruption.

SKYWARDS INCENTIVES TO 31 AUGUST

The fifth measure covers the Emirates Skywards programme. Until 31 August 2026, members require 20 per cent fewer Tier Miles to reach Silver, Gold and Platinum status, and earn 20 per cent bonus Tier Miles on Emirates and flydubai flights. The Cash+Miles rate has been improved to 2,000 Miles for US$30 rather than the usual US$15, applicable to Emirates or flydubai flights, excess baggage, lounge access and seat selection.

Read together, the five measures form a coherent commercial response rather than five separate customer service improvements. Unlimited changes and near-zero refund fees remove the financial risk of booking early; the 24-hour fare hold removes the risk of deciding quickly; the insurance removes the risk that an advisory notice strands a traveller uninsured; and the Skywards accelerators give frequent flyers a reason to commit within the month. Every element addresses the same underlying condition, which is a booking curve shortened by uncertainty in the region — the phenomenon Lufthansa Group identified in its own second quarter results, where the Chief Financial Officer cited considerably shorter booking cycles as making forecasting increasingly difficult.
