Phu Quoc International Airport is being transformed into a fully automated aviation hub with biometric passenger processing and scalable infrastructure ahead of APEC 2027.
Biometric-enabled passenger processing to support rapid capacity expansion ahead of APEC 2027
Phu Quoc International Airport is undergoing a major transformation aimed at positioning it as a next-generation aviation hub in the Asia-Pacific region, with fully automated passenger processing and scalable infrastructure at its core.
The project is being delivered through a partnership between SITA and Sun Group, with the upgraded airport expected to support significant growth in passenger volumes ahead of the APEC 2027 Forum.
SCALABLE CAPACITY AND INFRASTRUCTURE
The development includes a new Terminal 2, designed to handle up to 24 million passengers annually, with long-term capacity expected to scale to 50 million. The upgrade reflects Vietnam’s rapid air traffic growth and its increasing role as a regional aviation market.
The airport’s operational model is intended to serve as a blueprint for wider airport development across Vietnam, with similar systems planned for future projects.
END-TO-END AUTOMATED PASSENGER PROCESSING
At the core of the transformation is the deployment of a fully self-service passenger journey, supported by biometric-enabled systems.
Passengers will be able to complete the entire airport process through automated touchpoints, including check-in, seat selection, baggage tagging and drop-off, and boarding. These systems are coordinated through SITA’s Smart Path biometric platform, enabling seamless identity verification across multiple stages of the journey.
Infrastructure includes:
- Self-service kiosks for check-in and documentation
- Automated baggage drop units
- Biometric boarding gates
- Integrated baggage tracking and reconciliation systems
INTEGRATED AIRPORT OPERATIONS
Beyond passenger processing, the project incorporates a full suite of operational systems, including airport operational databases, passenger information display systems, and centralised airport management platforms.
These systems are designed to provide real-time operational visibility, supporting coordination across airline, airport, and ground handling functions.
To ensure operational resilience, a local departure control system will be deployed as a backup to maintain continuity in the event of system disruptions.
REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND STRATEGIC EXPANSION
The partnership between SITA and Sun Group extends beyond Phu Quoc, forming part of a broader strategy to modernise Vietnam’s aviation infrastructure. Additional developments are planned across multiple locations, with a focus on achieving international service standards.
Phu Quoc International Airport will also be operated in collaboration with Changi Airports International, introducing established operational practices from one of Asia’s leading aviation hubs.
The project, which commenced in early 2026, is scheduled for completion in mid-2027, aligning with regional infrastructure readiness ahead of APEC 2027.
