ETHIOPIAN AIRLINES CONFIRMS ORDER FOR SIX BOEING 787-9 AIRCRAFT

Ethiopian Airlines confirms an order for six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, supporting long-haul network expansion and increased cargo capacity.

Widebody expansion supports long-haul growth and increased cargo capacity

Ethiopian Airlines has confirmed an order for six additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft, converting options from its 2023 agreement with Boeing into firm orders.

The aircraft will be used to expand the airline’s intercontinental network from Addis Ababa while supporting increased cargo capacity on long-haul routes.

FLEET EXPANSION AND NETWORK GROWTH

Ethiopian Airlines already operates the largest 787 fleet in Africa, with both 787-8 and 787-9 variants deployed across routes linking Africa with Europe, Asia, and North America.

The additional aircraft will support continued network expansion and reinforce the airline’s position as a major intercontinental connector.

OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCY AND FLEXIBILITY

The 787-9 is positioned as a core component of the airline’s long-haul operations, offering range and fuel efficiency suited to both passenger and cargo demand.

The aircraft’s configuration enables operators to balance passenger services with belly cargo capacity, supporting high-demand trade routes while maintaining operational efficiency.

STRATEGIC POSITIONING IN GLOBAL MARKETS

The order reflects ongoing demand for long-haul travel and aligns with Ethiopian Airlines’ broader strategy of fleet modernisation and network development.

With a fleet exceeding 170 aircraft and service to more than 145 destinations, the airline continues to expand its role in connecting African markets with global destinations.
