Airbus has partnered with Mistral AI to expand the use of trusted artificial intelligence across commercial aviation, defence, helicopters and space activities, supporting engineering, operations and future aerospace applications.
Airbus has entered into a partnership agreement with European artificial intelligence company Mistral AI to expand the use of AI across its commercial aircraft, helicopter, defence and space activities. The agreement supports Airbus’ objective of integrating trusted and responsible artificial intelligence into its operations, products and services while maintaining strict security and sovereignty requirements.
FOCUS ON TRUSTED AND SECURE AI
According to Airbus, the collaboration is intended to strengthen the application of artificial intelligence throughout the aerospace lifecycle, from aircraft design and engineering to operational and onboard capabilities. The partnership will also address requirements for highly confidential, critical and military aerospace applications.
Under the agreement, Airbus will acquire licences for the full Mistral AI product suite, allowing deployment of AI models on-premises, in trusted cloud environments or through other secure infrastructure as required by Airbus and its customers. The arrangement also provides Airbus with direct access to Mistral AI researchers and input into future product development, supporting the creation of aerospace-specific AI solutions.
APPLICATIONS ACROSS OPERATIONS AND ENGINEERING
The companies have already identified several areas for collaboration. Within industrial operations, AI is expected to assist in streamlining complex workflows, including the automation of technical document production for commercial aircraft and helicopters.
In engineering and design, Airbus plans to utilise AI-driven simulations to accelerate innovation and development cycles. Potential applications include aircraft component optimisation and technical support for engineers during development, testing and certification activities.
EXPLORING NEXT-GENERATION AEROSPACE CAPABILITIES
The partnership will also examine the deployment of AI models directly onboard aircraft and spacecraft. Airbus said these edge AI capabilities could support functions such as automatic object recognition, contributing to improved situational awareness and enhanced flight safety.
In the defence sector, the companies are exploring secure AI applications tailored to military requirements, including cyber investigation tools and coding assistance systems deployed within highly protected environments.
SUPPORTING DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION
The agreement forms part of Airbus’ broader digital transformation strategy and reflects increasing interest across the aerospace sector in leveraging artificial intelligence to improve efficiency, support engineering processes and enhance operational capability while maintaining high standards of security and governance.
